A New Era for Canadian Precision Rifle: Introducing the PRS Foothills Region

The Precision Rifle Series (PRS) has officially expanded its footprint into Canada with the launch of the PRS Foothills Region, proudly presented by Apex Optics. This marks a significant milestone for Canadian precision rifle shooters, offering a dedicated regional series that aligns with PRS standards and provides opportunities for competitors to earn points toward both Regional and PRO Series standings.

Elevating Canadian Precision Shooting

Historically, Canadian shooters participated in broader U.S.-based PRS regions, often requiring extensive travel to compete in qualifying matches. The establishment of the Foothills Region addresses this challenge by bringing high-caliber PRS competitions closer to home. This initiative not only fosters local talent but also strengthens the Canadian presence in the international precision rifle community.

As highlighted in the January 2025 press release, Apex Optics’ commitment to the sport is evident through its expanded sponsorship and support for the new region.

Leadership and Vision

At the helm of this initiative is Carlee Krtolica, Vice President and COO of Apex Optics. Carlee brings a wealth of experience from both the corporate world and competitive shooting sports. Her leadership roles include serving on the board of the Canadian Precision Rifle Association (CAPRA) and her recent appointment as Chair of the Athlete Commission on the IPRF Executive Council.

“The creation of the PRS Foothills Region has been years in the making”, says Foothills Regional Director, Carlee Krtolica. “While PRS-style matches aren’t new to this part of Canada—thanks to dedicated Match Directors who’ve been hosting 2-day centerfire outlaw matches that closely follow the Precision Rifle Series rulebook—this is the first time the region has been officially unified under one banner.

Bringing all the Match Directors together for a single meeting to build a coordinated schedule with minimal overlap was a huge milestone. This collaboration ensures that shooters get the most out of a limited season.

Due to our climate, the Foothills Region has the shortest season on the PRS calendar. Even after the snow melts, some areas take weeks before the ground is stable enough to host events.

Growth in PRS Rimfire was slow at first, but momentum is building. More Match Directors are coming on board and adding matches each week. Expanding Rimfire in this region is a vital part of growing the sport overall.”

Ken Wheeler, President of the Precision Rifle Series, shared his thoughts on the start of this new chapter in the PRS community.

“We are thrilled to have Apex Optics continue their presenting sponsorship of the Northeast Region and expand their support by becoming the presenting sponsor of the new Canadian Foothills region. Their commitment to the Precision Rifle Series is a testament to their dedication to our sport and the shooting community as a whole. Apex Optics’ support not only enhances our competitions but also helps grow the sport by reaching new regions and competitors. We’re proud to partner with a company that shares our passion for growing the sport and supporting the community.”

Inaugural Match: The Taber Rust Buster

The Foothills Region’s first match, aptly named The Rust Buster, took place in April, signaling a strong start to the season. Organized by Match Director Jono Dorohoy (pictured), the event attracted a diverse group of shooters eager to engage in competitive precision rifle shooting within Canada.

Jono Dorohoy was the Match Director for the kick-off match of the Foothills Region. “This match had a well-balanced COF, challenging shooters with reading twitchy winds and mirage for long range .22LR. With stable props and an organized target array, it was a great way to get everyone back into gear for the 2025 PRS season. This is the first year for TPRC (Taber Precision Rifle Club) being officially affiliated with the Precision Rifle Series. This match was aimed towards both new and highly experienced competitive shooters who wish gain point to go towards their PRS standing and push them closer to potentially represent our country at the rimfire worlds championship.”

Team Apex shooter Cheyanne Popp shared her experience as a competitor at the match.

“The sun was shining, and the Taber winds were calm, but just spicy enough for the long bombs. Savanna (Cheyanne’s daughter and Team Apex Junior Shooter) took home Top Jr. and Top Lady for the weekend, with a highlight from Stage 2 of the competition. She kicked off the stage with forgetting to inset her magazine, had to pull off an unexpected mag change during – and everything fell out of her pockets – and she still managed to clean the stage! It was a weekend filled with fun and community and a fantastic way to kick things off in the new Foothills region”

The match featured challenging stages designed to test competitors’ skills and adaptability, setting a high standard for future events in the region.

Looking Ahead

With a minimum of four PRO Series qualifiers scheduled, the PRS Foothills Region is poised to become a cornerstone of Canadian precision rifle competition. Apex Optics’ sponsorship ensures that participants will experience well-organized events with top-tier support and recognition.

As the season progresses, shooters can look forward to more opportunities to showcase their skills, connect with the community, and contribute to the growth of precision rifle sports in Canada.
